The Liberry Teacher
In 2010 I left my old job as a school librarian to go to Denmark with my husband. I loved being the "Liberry Teacher", as the kids liked to call me, but I was ready for a change. A big change. The kind of change that involves traveling across the world and learning another language.
At the time, I was also in the midst of finishing my masters degree in adult education. It wasn't always easy working full time and going to school, but I was lucky in that I was able to leave work early so that I could do a sort of internship in an ESOL classroom. Then it was time to sell all my belongings and jump on a plane.
But why a masters in education and not information science? This was not an easy decision for me. However, since I was already working as a librarian before I went into graduate school, I decided that I would focus my studies on my other passion--teaching.
There's something magical about leading a classroom of learners. It's a high like no other. All these people are looking to you for input. It's the kind of power that can go to one's head, for sure. Thankfully, my passion to further information literacy keeps me grounded. I consider it my job to make myself obsolete. Teach people to how to get the information so that they can teach themselves. That kind of thing.
As for Denmark, it was wonderful. I hope to go back there soon. I could not get work before my student visa ran out, however, so ended up moving on. My husband and I flew to the UK and that is where we live now. Life continues to be an adventure.
