Never underestimate social media. I found my job through FaceBook

Let me explain. It took me a long time to find work in the UK. First I had to get my visa. Then I had to take the Life in the UK test. Eventually, I got indefinite leave to remain. For a while, I worked for a friend and I volunteered at the local library, A LOT. I got a dog. Basically, I did whatever I could to keep busy.

I found out about CILIP graduate trainee ships sometime last year. I applied for several positions, but the competition is steep so I knew my chances were not great. I never knew if I was over or under qualified. Anyway, I eventually found the CILIP FaceBook page and started to talk with other trainee ship hopefuls.

Meanwhile, the library I volunteered for was hiring and I applied right away. I saw a library assistant job was being offered by an NHS library on FaceBook. I applied for it...I was basically sending my CV to everyone anyway, so why not?

You know how they say that when it rains, it pours? I was amazed when I got an interview for both libraries. I was even more amazed when both wanted to hire me. I ended up taking the job in the hospital because it fit in more with my career interests.

I do miss the public library a little bit though. Even though I love my job, I sometimes miss the hectic business of the Gravesend Library. There was always some kind of drama going on.
